Alex Callinicos (1950)

Alexander Theodore Callinicos, nacido el 24 de julio de 1950, es un intelectual y militante marxista británico de origen sudafricano. Partidario del trotskismo, es miembro del Comité Central del Partido Socialista de los Trabajadores (Socialist Workers Party – SWP) y se desempeña como su secretario internacional. Entre 2009 y 2020 fue editor de International Socialism, la revista teórica del SWP, y ha publicado varios libros.

Se involucró en la política revolucionaria como estudiante en el Balliol College de Oxford, donde cursó la licenciatura y conoció a Christopher Hitchens, entonces miembro activo de los International Socialists (precursores del SWP). También obtuvo su doctorado en Oxford.

El primer escrito de Callinicos para los Socialistas Internacionales fue un análisis del movimiento estudiantil de la época. Sus otros primeros escritos se centraron en el sur de África y en el filósofo estructuralista-marxista francés Louis Althusser. En 1977, Callinicos se casó con Joanna Seddon, también estudiante de doctorado en Oxford.

Callinicos participó en la Contracumbre a la Reunión del FMI/Banco Mundial en Praga, en septiembre de 2000, y en la manifestación contra el G8 en Génova, en junio de 2001. También ha participado en la organización del Foro Social en Europa. Colaboró ​​en el Dictionnaire Marx Contemporain (2001) y ha escrito artículos para New Left Review.

Fue catedrático de Ciencias Políticas en la Universidad de York antes de ser nombrado catedrático de Estudios Europeos en el King’s College de Londres en septiembre de 2005. Sucedió a Chris Harman como editor de International Socialism en enero de 2010, poco después del fallecimiento de Harman, y es corresponsal británico de Actuel Marx. Callinicos se unió al comité central del SWP a finales de la década de 1970; aún conserva este cargo.

En enero de 2013, en el contexto de una grave crisis dentro del Partido Socialista de los Trabajadores (SWP) del Reino Unido, relacionada con la respuesta del partido a una acusación de violación contra un miembro destacado del partido, Martin Smith, conocido internamente como Camarada Delta, y con la demanda de cambios en la forma existente del sistema de centralismo democrático dentro del SWP, escribió una defensa del leninismo y del centralismo democrático. Callinicos discrepó con quienes defendían la necesidad de cambiar el sistema existente. Calificó la acusación de violación como un «caso disciplinario difícil», un comentario por el cual la feminista socialista Laurie Penny pensó que «[confundió] una petición de respeto básico a la autonomía sexual de las mujeres con un intento de socavar la revolución desde dentro».

Callinicos adoptó una postura destacada sobre otro tema que había dividido al Partido Socialista de los Trabajadores (SWP): el uso de internet en desacuerdos sobre asuntos confidenciales del partido. Se quejó del «lado oscuro de internet», donde algunos individuos «utilizaban blogs y redes sociales para lanzar campañas dentro del SWP».
